East Mode: Call for Artists
Applications are closed! Applicants will be informed mid September.
Vibrance in partnership with Clarence City Council are calling for expressions of interest from artists for East Mode.
East Mode will take place in late November, 2021 and is a new initiative to bring urban art to Rosny and the Eastern Shore. Painting will take place over a week and culminate in a one-day event of live art, cultural activities and music.
This project will commission 5 Tasmanian artists to install artworks on walls in the Bayfield Street area of Rosny and is aimed at bringing a lasting cultural impact to one of Greater Hobart’s busiest precincts.
This is an exciting opportunity for artists to have their work included in what is hoped to be the first iteration of many in the Clarence municipality. Artists of all career stages are encouraged to apply. Some walls may include a mentorship component and applicants are asked to indicate their willingness to participate in this program on the application.
This project is assisted through Arts Tasmania.
Who can apply
This opportunity is only available to artists residing in Tasmania. Groups are welcome to apply, however the artist fee for each wall is a set amount and will be shared rather than increased for group installations.
Wall location
Walls are located in the Bayfield Street area and surrounds between Bligh Street and Cambridge Road. There are 5 walls to be painted, with sizes between 3mx3m and 13mx4m. Artists are asked to only apply if they feel they can comfortably work on and complete murals of this size with minimal assistance. Some artist support will be provided.
When
The walls will be painted between November 22-28th, each wall will be installed individually. The painting timeframe for each wall will vary based on access, size and location.
Budget
This is a paid opportunity; each artist will be paid a separate design fee and an installation fee for their work. Vibrance will support the artist by providing all materials, access to equipment and organise all related planning and safety requirements. The artist will produce a design for the wall and then work with Vibrance to install the mural.
Mentoring
Two to three of the chosen artists will be asked to mentor a student interested in a career in the arts. The artist will do a skills exchange with the student. The student will then join the artist as an assistant to help complete their mural (under direction of the artist). This will be an additional mentorship fee on top of the artist’s fee for completing the mural. Not all artists are required to be part of a mentorship, in your application please indicate your preference.
Selection
Submissions will be assessed against the following, equally weighted criteria:
● The quality and originality of your work
● The impact your work will have on the surrounding public space
● Evidence of working on large scale works
● The impact it will have on your arts practice
● Availability of the artist during the production time frame
Five artists or artist groups will be selected on the basis of advice from a panel consisting of representatives from Vibrance and Clarence City Council. Selection will be made using only the material you supply in your application. Vibrance aims to ensure gender and cultural balance where possible in our selection process.
