Mill Lane Mural Project

The Mill Lane Mural Project will commission an artist (or group of artists) to spend time becoming familiar with the programs delivered within the precinct and then paint one or more large murals within the new facility.

The Mill Lane Precinct is a project by the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) created to provide safe and modern supported workplaces as well as emergency relief services. Located in Glenorchy, the precinct accommodates supported employment workplaces for St Vincent Industries and Tas Textiles, a regional office for SVdP, an emergency relief hub, commercial kitchen and facilities for Vinnies Loui’s food vans, and two retail stores.

The selected artist(s) will work independently to undertake research and collaboration with staff, volunteers, supported workers, and community members. Through workshops, interviews, and site visits, artists will gain insight into the precinct’s values and aspirations to guide the creation of interior and/or exterior murals that reflect shared stories of resilience, compassion, and community.

Vibrance has been commissioned to help find and select an artist for this commission. Once selected the artist will work directly and independently with Maguire + Devine Architects and St Vincent de Paul Society to deliver the project.

Selection Criteria

Submissions will be assessed against the following, equally weighted criteria:

The quality and originality of your work
Evidence of creating high quality large scale murals
Experience working with communities to inform your design

Selection will be made using only the material you supply in your application, so ensure to include a broad range of your best work and consider the selection criteria above.

If you have worked on murals before, we strongly suggest that your folio primarily includes mural work. Artists with no mural experience are unlikely to be selected.

We do not require designs or concepts at this stage.

Payment

There is a total project fee of $22,000 (ex GST if applicable).
This fee includes all research, workshops, design, installation, access equipment, materials and safety requirements to complete the project.
Once engaged, the artist will be required to manage the project with support from Maguire + Devine Architects.

Required Outcomes

The artist should paint approximately 60m2 of murals by the end of this project. This could be one large mural or broken into multiple smaller murals.
The exact mural locations are to be decided through negotiation between the artist and St Vincent de Paul Society, after the artist has completed site visits and research.
The artist should engage with the community and organisations through workshops and/or interviews to inform their research.
The artist will be required to independently manage the budget, materials, access equipment, safety etc.

Eligibility

The artist will be required to hold appropriate public liability insurance
The artist must be living in Lutruwita/Tasmania (and will be for the next 12 months)
The artist must be over 18 years of age
The artist must hold a current Working With Vulnerable People card
Groups of artists are welcome to apply, however the project fee is a fixed amount and so would need to be shared amongst participating artists should you apply as a group

Creative Brief

The artist will be expected to create designs that are guided by their own research and through consultation with the communities that use Mill Lane.
The murals painted as part of this project are intended to share stories of resilience, compassion and community. How this is interpreted is up to the artist and they will be free to paint in their own style. However the artist will be expected to communicate how their designs connect to these themes.
The artist must not incorporate into the artwork any design elements which may breach the intellectual property rights of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community without first obtaining appropriate consent in writing from or on behalf of that community.

The Walls

The following photos are taken across the 2,500m2 precinct and represent many of the possible mural locations. We have chosen not to be specific about which walls should be painted so that artists have the flexibility to respond to the walls in their own way. Some artists may prefer to paint one large wall, whilst others may choose to paint smaller murals in multiple locations.

The selected artist will work with Maguire + Devine Architects and St Vincent de Paul Society to decide the exact locations of the murals after visiting the site and conducting some research.
