Overview

Vibrance is holding a street art festival between 22-28 February 2021. Murals will be painted along Elizabeth Street and the public is invited to watch the artworks be created. Vibrance and the City of Hobart have created this opportunity because we are committed to seeing more Tasmanian Aboriginal artists produce murals in Tasmania.

Who can apply

This opportunity is only available to Tasmanian Aboriginal artists residing in Tasmania.

Equal Opportunities Tasmania, Exemption Order number 20/11/030.

Wall location

The wall to be painted is the side of 60 Patrick Street. The intention is to produce a large and impactful artwork, but the exact area to be painted will be decided in collaboration with the artist. See area indicted in picture.

Wall location

When

The wall will be painted during Vibrance 2021, the selected artist will have the week of the festival to install their mural.

How

Vibrance will support the artist by providing all materials and access equipment, organising all related planning and safety requirements. The artist will be included in the advertised line up for the festival and be well supported by our festival staff throughout the week so that they can focus on producing their mural.

Budget

The artist fee for the project is $3700 and this includes an allocation of $500 towards provision of a preliminary design for the artwork.

All materials, access equipment, artist support (lunch and drinks during painting days), and overall project management will be provided by Vibrance.

Mentorship Opportunity

There is capacity to support a mentor or artist's assistant who has experience painting large walls or working with mediums suited to large scale murals. In your application please indicate if you would be interested in this when filling out the application form. The fee for the mentor program is separate to the fee listed above.

Selection Criteria

Submissions will be assessed against the following, equally weighted criteria:

  1. Strength and relevance of past portfolio work
  2. Impact it will have on their practice
  3. Capacity to complete the commission

Artists or artist teams will be selected on the basis of advice from a panel comprising Denise Robinson, a Vibrance Festival team member and a representative from the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre.
